How collection and payment work

1. Describe the vehicle. Tell us whether it is complete, whether it rolls and steers, and if the catalytic converter, battery, wheels or other major parts are missing. Photos help when damage or restricted access may change collection costs.
2. Agree the final offer. We check the vehicle details and the collection plan before confirming the amount. If the car differs from its description, we explain any proposed change and ask you to agree it before collection.
3. Verify the seller and collect. Have accepted identity and address evidence ready and your V5C logbook if you have it. We check the vehicle and its paperwork at handover. If you are acting for the keeper or owner, tell us beforehand so we can check your authority to dispose of it.
4. Payment at collection. For a vehicle being scrapped in England or Wales, payment is arranged by bank transfer at collection once the agreed details and required checks match. No cash is paid for a scrap car. Check that the payment reaches the correct account; bank processing can vary. If a check cannot be completed, we will explain the next step before handover.
5. Authorised treatment. A vehicle that is genuinely being scrapped must go to an authorised treatment facility (ATF). Confirm the receiving facility and its Certificate of Destruction arrangements before you agree collection.

What identification do I need to sell a scrap car?

In England and Wales, a scrap metal dealer must verify the seller's full name and residential address. Have a valid photo document showing your full name and address, or photo identification together with separate recent proof of address. A photocard driving licence may cover both if its address is current; a passport normally needs separate address evidence, such as a qualifying recent bank statement or utility bill. We will confirm which documents are acceptable before collection. V5C logbook, private plates and DVLA notification

Have the V5C registration certificate available if you have it. GOV.UK says to give the V5C to the ATF but keep the yellow ‘sell, transfer or part-exchange your vehicle to the motor trade’ section. The registered keeper must tell DVLA the vehicle has been taken to an ATF; collection alone does not automatically end keeper responsibility. If the V5C is missing, tell us before booking so the handover and DVLA notification can be checked. If you want to retain a personalised registration number, apply to take it off the vehicle before it is scrapped; GOV.UK says to wait for the retention document and replacement V5C. Read the DVLA private plate instructions.

Certificate of Destruction and licensed disposal

For a car completely scrapped by an ATF, the ATF issues a Certificate of Destruction within seven days. Ask who will send it to you and keep a copy. If an ATF decides to repair and resell a vehicle, a Certificate of Destruction is not issued; make sure the intended outcome is clear before handing over the vehicle. Can I get cash when you collect my scrap car?

What if the car has no keys or will not roll?

Tell us before booking. We need to check access and safe loading arrangements, so the online form will request a checked offer rather than inventing a price.

Do missing parts change the offer?

They can. Missing major parts and access problems can affect an ATF's treatment or collection costs. Describe them before the quote is confirmed; if the vehicle differs at collection, we explain any change before you agree to it.

Do I still need to tell DVLA?

Yes. The registered keeper must notify DVLA of the disposal to an ATF, even when someone else arranges collection. Keep the relevant V5C section and the ATF's Certificate of Destruction. Check the current DVLA steps.
